On Monday, June 27, the Mexican immigrant community from Philadelphia and the surrounding area, including New Jersey, held a solidarity vigil and cultural blockade of the Mexican consulate in Center City Philadelphia to protest the repression and police murders of teachers and their supporters in Oaxaca. The protest, which occurred in a rainstorm, was from 8 pm until 2 am, with several hundred participating over the course of the evening.
Participants were mainly working class immigrant families and their supporters, including rank and file Philadelphia school teachers. There were speeches, poetry, musical groups and the Danza Azteca, folkloric dance group. All present were unified in their opposition to the repression and calling for the downfall of the narco government of President Enrique Peña Nieto.
